Skipper Based Handicapping
(2008)
|
At last years Keel Fleet annual meeting it was agreed that for AYC Series races in 2008 the Keel Fleet would informally "score" races with skipper based handicap adjustments for evaluation. Follow the link below to view the skipper based informal scoring results for the Frostbite series. The evaluation scoring method used, simply subtracts 3 seconds per mile (cumulatively) from the PHRF handicap for all races after a skipper/boat combination wins a race. All PHRF fleets were scored with this method. Overall these changes reduced the corrected time spread in the races and changed the corrected time finish order in only a few races but in only one event Leukemia Warm UP and in one fleet (B Fleet) would the series winners have changed. The skippers that won the most races even with the race by race handicap modifications were Bayerdorffer/Eller in A fleet with 5 race wins (-15s/mi) , Mike Cambers in B Fleet with 6 race wins (-18s/mi) and Duane Dobson in Non Spinnaker with 4 race wins (-12s/mi). Overall to date there has been little to no feed back from the fleet on this handicapping process. The conclusion drawn from this scoring experiment is that it does not enjoy significant fleet level interest nor did it provide an added racing inducement to get more boats racing. No further action with Skipper based handicapping is planned for the fleet at this time. Please offer comments or suggestions to Steve Vaughan (vaughansm@gmail.com) regarding this experimental scoring method. |
