From the Commodore

Wow what a great Turnback that was! It was great to see members faces again, and it seemed that everyone was pumped to race, eat and dance together again. This was all made possible by the regatta co-chairs Jeff Sabuda and Dee Chow along with Social Committee Chair Cathie Martin and a host of volunteers. Thanks to all of you for making this a great event!

I wanted to bring to your attention various items being worked on by board members, and volunteer committees.

First, I am constantly amazed how many emails are exchanged by the Permanent Race Committee. PRC is always hard at work, constantly reviewing, discussing, re-evaluating, and making new recommendations on the racing scene. The committee has risen to the challenge of making racing fun and fair during abnormal times. You might not always agree with them, but it isn’t because they haven’t thought of every aspect and discussed it thoroughly.  It has been tough having to alter the entire racing strategy for every series, but they have done an excellent job.

Sail Training has entered a new contract with Wind Advisory aka Bobby Brooks to provide regatta support, fleet analysis and debriefs and series racing and debriefs. The Road Runner regatta will be the first of this support effort. He is also available through his new company to provide individual lessons and training. We are looking forward to this relationship and the expertise he can bring to our club.

The harbor committee consists of dock, dry sail, and work area captains. They monitor slip occupants, and member’s requests to move.  They monitor the condition of the docks, coordinate repairs, and hire out to move them when necessary.  They have also set up a matrix of information consisting of the slip/slot size, depth of water, type of boat, and occupant of each slip/slot. This information is passed along to Jackie who bills the proper occupant accordingly. The Harbor Committee’s job tends to be a complaint department and a thankless one. We are so lucky that these volunteers give us their time and patience.

Did you know that the AYC finances are audited every other year? We hire an outside auditor who reports their findings to 3 board members plus a 3-member finance committee. The audit is currently under way and we will report back to the members once its completed.

Our secretary, Cheryl Pervier, has been hard at work trying to make recommendations to update the AYC handbook. The handbook is inconsistent, confusing and has been haphazardly added onto in the past. It makes it difficult to address members’ questions when the handbook sometimes contradicts itself.  The plan is to address discrepancies in the entire document and vote on the updated version sometime this year.

I asked Linda McDavitt and Ed Pierce to work on updating the board and staff position descriptions of tasks and duties. The current descriptions on file are from 2013 and are too generalized, only a few sentences in some cases. The point is to capture the details of the job, and how the position interacts with staff. This will be used as a guideline for better recruitment and preparation for new board members and their committees.

This month, I have only touched base with you on half of the items going on at the club. Next time I will update you on, summer camp, adult training, membership committee, building and grounds, the AYC directory, archives, social committee, communications, etc.

Enjoy the next summer race series and activities coming up at the club.

Diane Covert,

Commodore
