High School Sailing Winter Season Requirements
ALL SAILORS MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TO PARTICIPATE:
Neoprene boots or socks
Towel and dry change of clothes for each practice
Base layers – fleece or synthetic material
**Here is a link to a good selection of cold weather gear. It is important to consider that a spray top should be a little large to accommodate additional layers underneath.
Team Racing Class: Sailors must have written approval from Coach Coleman to register for this class. Please email me if you are interested in signing up. This class will be a higher level class focused on team racing and advanced racing tactics. There will be limited spots available. This class will expect a commitment to attend practices.
HS Preseason: Sailors must have completed at least one season of High School Sailing or Junior Sailing to register for this class. We do not want brand new sailors to try sailing for the first time in January because the conditions can be quite discouraging. This class will be focused on intermediate sailing knowledge such as skippering, reading the wind, and boathandling.
**Sailors can participate in both practices if they have been approved for Team Racing. Ex: If there is a sailor who wants to crew for team racing, but also wants to improve their skippering, they are encouraged to register for both practices.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Typically, January and February are very windy, between 12-20kts and cold, between 30-45 degrees. Because of this, sailors will not leave the dock if they do not come equipped with the correct gear. The most important gear that sailors will bring is their dry clothes so they can change out of practice. A wetsuit, fleece and spray top will keep them warm in the water, but after sailing they will need to change into warm clothes.
