Fleets At AYC

AYC is proud to have the following fleets sailing at the club.

One-Design Keel Boats

Catalina 22 Fleet

The Catalina 22 is one of the more versatile designs among the fleets at AYC. Many other boats are bigger, faster, lighter, or more trailerable – but with your C22 you can do many things. You can race one-design from the Club level to a national championship, cruise around Lake Travis, trailer to other racing and cruising places, and comfortably spend the night on board your boat. Skills learned in a C22 can be used on many other types of boats. It’s a great boat that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Ensign Fleet

The Ensign Fleet at AYC is a member of the Ensign Class Association. We have 15 Ensigns in our fleet. We race under One Design Rules in club series races and in regional and national Ensign class championships. In regatta racing the skipper has the option of racing one design or PHRF handicaps. Our fleet membership currently includes two Regional Champions and one National Champion.

South Coast 21 Fleet

The South Coast 21 is a Carl Alberg design. South Coast produced about 300 of these boats. There is an active racing fleet on Lake Travis near Austin, Texas.

J 22 Fleet

The J22 is a great sailing boat. It is responsive and with its fixed lead keel, it is stable. It’s as much fun to single-hand with main only as it is to plane under spinnaker in 18 knots of wind.

J 24 Fleet

Welcome to Austin Yacht Club’s J/24 Fleet. Established in 1979, we recently celebrated 30 years of racing on Lake Travis as the second oldest recognized one design fleet at AYC.

Pearson 26 Fleet

The Pearson 26 is one of the fastest growing fleets at the Austin Yacht Club, recently achieving one-design status. The Pearson 26 is a true Racer/Cruiser. With a Pearson 26, you can take the family on an overnight cruise on Saturday night and race on Sunday.  It is the perfect “family boat.”

Centerboard Boats

Sunfish Fleet

Whatever your skill level, from novice to guru, you’ll find an opportunity here to participate and enjoy the Sunfish experience.  If you are interested but not quite sure how to start, contact the Sunfish Fleet Captain and we’ll get you on your way!

The gate is open for all to sail either sunfish or laser on Wednesday. First start is at 6 and we race to sunset May through September. We meet under the club house after the races.

Laser Fleet

Wednesday night racing season runs from May through September (check the AYC calendar for exact dates.) First gun is at 6pm off the point at AYC and racing ends at dusk. Come join us for some great short course racing and a gathering together afterward. We have boats to borrow and are always on the lookout for boats to get new fleet members racing.

Centerboard Handicap Fleet

Dinghy (centerboard boat) sailing is the foundation of every world class sailor. Everyone has to start somewhere, and small boat racing is the fastest and surest way to learn how a sailboat reacts to steering and sail trim to go fast. Get started with the informal racing at AYC. It’s also a great way of socializing and maintaining physical fitness, strength and flexibility.

PHRF/Portsmouth Fleet

Performance Racing Fleet

Within the Austin Yacht Club (AYC) racing is focused into five one-design fleets and three handicap fleets. The handicap fleets allow nearly every sailboat manufactured to race in a time adjusted (i.e.: handicap) competitive environment. The three handicap fleets are centerboard (non-ballasted) boats, ballasted or keel boats and multihull boats. The Keel Handicap Fleet or Keel Fleet establishes Local PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet) ratings to adjust elapsed racing times to allow different speed potential boats to race on an competitive basis. The Austin Yacht Club Keel Fleet is a member of US Sailing.

Multihull Handicap Fleet

AYC’s Multi-hull Fleet is for Trimarans and Catamarans. The Multihull Fleet actively participates in all Series Races at AYC, as well as local and Regional Regattas.

Radio Controlled Boats

Dragonflight 95 (DF95) Fleet

Radio Sailing is thriving at AYC with DF95 racing weekly. Join us!!

Junior Fleets (Traveling Sailor Support)

RoadRunner Junior Sailing Fleet

The RoadRunner Fleet is primarily comprised of youth sailors racing in Optimists, Lasers, C420s, and FJs. It is organized and overseen by parents and established by-laws. The RoadRunner Board focuses its efforts on racing and regattas, leaving club sailing lessons and camps to the Sail Training department of AYC. The RoadRunner fleet is heavily involved with the Texas Sailing Association, USODA, AYC’s Frostbite Series, AYC’s Endless Summer Series, and simply getting on the water every chance we can.
